The Aloha 'Āina Food Recovery Program is a local food waste reduction initiative that the garden became a site for, and it is now an essential section of the garden. In Hawaii, we toss 237,000 tons of food per year, or 26% of the available food supply into the trash. This means that we are wasting money, and more importantly, valuable resources and food. To counter this issue, the Aloha 'Āina Food Recovery Program, in tandem with the Garden, recovers some of this waste and uses it to create effective compost that will help the food garden grow, and maintain the garden as a whole. The students of various classes have been the leading force for this effort, and it has been a boon to the Garden.
